"As an orthopaedic spine surgeon, specializing in complex and minimally invasive spine surgery, I am pleased to serve the Virginia, Maryland, and DC region. My patients appreciate the personal attention, professional integrity, and open communication that defines my medical practice. My goal is to be the patient's best advocate when assisting them in making important health decisions."
DEDICATED TO THE ADVANCEMENT OF ENDOSCOPIC SPINE SURGERY
Dr. Zahir is a board certified orthopaedic spine surgeon specializing in minimally invasive spine surgery. He has advanced training in procedures that can often avoid the need for spinal fusions. As a fellowship trained spine surgeon, Dr. Zahir performs several non-fusion treatments including endoscopic spine surgery. In cases where a fusion is needed, he also performs minimally invasive spinal fusions using CT Navigation and has training with robotic spine surgery.
Dr. Zahir is one of the few surgeons in Virginia, DC, and Maryland performing endoscopic spine surgery and is taking a leading role in the adoption of this technique in the region. Some endoscopic procedures can be performed with incisions that are less than a centimeter. He has trained under well respected leaders in endoscopic spine surgery from the United States and Germany. He is also the first surgeon to use the Illessys/Ilessys Delta Joimax Endoscopic spine system in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia region for the treatment of spinal stenosis.
Dr. Zahir received his bachelor of science in physiology and neurobiology from the University of Maryland, followed by a doctorate in medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery and an additional fellowship in spine surgery at the University of Maryland Medical/Shock Trauma Center. He gained experiences in spine trauma, tumors, and spinal deformities.
Upon completion of his academic career, Dr. Zahir joined Medstar Orthopaedic Institute. For five years he served as Clinical Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and was on staff at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital and Medstar St. Mary's Hospital. It was during this time that he developed an interest in exploring endoscopic spine surgical techniques that have become popular in Europe and Asia. In 2017, he joined HCA Physicians Group and was the first surgeon to begin offering lumbar endoscopic services at two hospitals in Central and Northern Virginia. In 2019, he joined Metro Orthopedics & Sports Therapy, a division of the Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics.
Dr. Zahir's practice conveniently serves patients from Virginia, Maryland, and Washington DC. The goal is to continue a tradition of uncompromising patient-centered care that focuses on patient education and the use of minimally invasive solutions for spinal conditions.
Dr. Zahir is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is a member of the North American Spine Society and Society for Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery.
Dr. Zahir takes a comprehensive approach when it comes to musculoskeletal care and approaches each patient as if they were a member of his own family. Patients can trust that he will always try non-operative treatments when effective, and will recommend surgery only as a last resort.
